Usage

Usage

Rubber-Lagged Drive Pulley — a drive pulley coated with rubber lagging for friction and belt protection. The lagging grips the belt, spreads the drive load and cushions the surface so the belt cover is not scuffed; the default choice for most drives.

Operating conditions

Operating conditions

Working temperatureAmbient range (-20 °C to +40 °C); rubber or ceramic lagging rated about -20 °C to +80 °C.
Dusty environmentSuitable — labyrinth or IP65 seals keep dust out of the bearings

Technical overview

Pulleys drive, redirect and tension the conveyor belt across the system. HBXM pulleys are available from 200 mm to 1600 mm diameter with static or vulcanized rubber lagging, and are dynamically balanced for smooth running at high belt speeds.

What is the difference between drive and tail pulleys?

The drive pulley is powered by the motor and pulls the belt; the tail pulley is an unpowered redirect at the loading end, often with a take-up.

Why add rubber lagging to a pulley?

Lagging increases friction so the belt does not slip, protects the shell from wear, and can be grooved to shed water and mud.

What is a motorized pulley?

A motorized pulley encloses the motor and gearbox inside the drum, giving a compact, sealed, low-maintenance drive for confined spaces.

How do I size a conveyor pulley?

Size by shaft and bearing load from belt tension and torque, then choose diameter for the target belt speed and lagging type.

What is a conveyor belt drive pulley?

A conveyor belt drive pulley is the powered drum that transmits motor torque to the belt through friction. HBXM drive pulleys use vulcanized rubber or ceramic lagging to grip the belt without slip.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why lag a pulley at all?

Lagging raises the friction coefficient so the drive can transmit its torque without slip. Without it, a wet or dusty pulley can slip at a fraction of the belt's rated tension.

Grooved or plain rubber?

Plain rubber for dry, clean duty. Grooved or herringbone patterns help water and fines escape the nip, which is what restores grip in wet conditions.

How thick should lagging be?

Typically 8–12 mm for rubber and 12–20 mm for ceramic tiles, but the right answer follows from the required traction and the pulley diameter — we calculate it for each drive.
