Usage

Usage

Ceramic-Lagged Pulley — a head pulley whose surface is tiled with ceramic, giving extreme grip even when wet, muddy or icy. Where a rubber-lagged pulley slips and chews the belt, ceramic lagging restores traction and stops slip-fire on steep or wet lines.

Operating conditions

Operating conditions

Working temperatureAmbient range (-20 °C to +40 °C); rubber or ceramic lagging rated about -20 °C to +80 °C.
Dusty environmentSuitable — labyrinth or IP65 seals keep dust out of the bearings

Technical overview

Pulleys drive, redirect and tension the conveyor belt across the system. HBXM pulleys are available from 200 mm to 1600 mm diameter with static or vulcanized rubber lagging, and are dynamically balanced for smooth running at high belt speeds.

What is the difference between drive and tail pulleys?

The drive pulley is powered by the motor and pulls the belt; the tail pulley is an unpowered redirect at the loading end, often with a take-up.

Why add rubber lagging to a pulley?

Lagging increases friction so the belt does not slip, protects the shell from wear, and can be grooved to shed water and mud.

What is a motorized pulley?

A motorized pulley encloses the motor and gearbox inside the drum, giving a compact, sealed, low-maintenance drive for confined spaces.

How do I size a conveyor pulley?

Size by shaft and bearing load from belt tension and torque, then choose diameter for the target belt speed and lagging type.

What is a conveyor belt drive pulley?

A conveyor belt drive pulley is the powered drum that transmits motor torque to the belt through friction. HBXM drive pulleys use vulcanized rubber or ceramic lagging to grip the belt without slip.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Rubber or ceramic lagging — how do I choose?

Rubber gives better grip in dry duty and is cheaper. Ceramic wins wherever water, mud or fine slurry is present, because the tile studs break the water film. In wet drives the difference in achievable traction is large.

How is ceramic lagging fitted?

Tiles are bonded into a rubber backing and vulcanised onto the pulley shell, then the surface is ground to the finished diameter. Bolt-on ceramic strips are also available for retrofits.

Will ceramic lagging damage my belt?

No, provided the tiles are properly embedded and the pulley is correctly crowned. Exposed tile edges are what cause cover damage, so quality of manufacture matters more here than in rubber lagging.
