What is the difference between drive and tail pulleys?
The drive pulley is powered by the motor and pulls the belt; the tail pulley is an unpowered redirect at the loading end, often with a take-up.

Overview
Usage
Bend (Take-Up) Pulley — a pulley that redirects the belt around a corner or between sections. It changes the belt path at head, tail and take-up points and, sized and placed correctly, controls wrap angle and tension through the route. (A bend pulley redirects; the take-up pulley additionally applies tension.)
Operating conditions
| Working temperature | Ambient range (-20 °C to +40 °C); rubber or ceramic lagging rated about -20 °C to +80 °C. |
|---|---|
| Dusty environment | Suitable — labyrinth or IP65 seals keep dust out of the bearings |
| Moisture & water | Suitable — IP65 sealing for outdoor, port, washdown and humid duty |
| Corrosive environment | Powder-coated for ordinary acid or alkali · Galvanized for coastal and semi-outdoor · Stainless for high-salinity and high-humidity sites |
| Certification | MA coal-mine safety certified versions available — confirm the certified SKUs for your project |
| Outdoor use | Suitable — coated and stainless options for coastal and weathering service |
Pulleys drive, redirect and tension the conveyor belt across the system. HBXM pulleys are available from 200 mm to 1600 mm diameter with static or vulcanized rubber lagging, and are dynamically balanced for smooth running at high belt speeds.
The drive pulley is powered by the motor and pulls the belt; the tail pulley is an unpowered redirect at the loading end, often with a take-up.
Lagging increases friction so the belt does not slip, protects the shell from wear, and can be grooved to shed water and mud.
A motorized pulley encloses the motor and gearbox inside the drum, giving a compact, sealed, low-maintenance drive for confined spaces.
Size by shaft and bearing load from belt tension and torque, then choose diameter for the target belt speed and lagging type.
A conveyor belt drive pulley is the powered drum that transmits motor torque to the belt through friction. HBXM drive pulleys use vulcanized rubber or ceramic lagging to grip the belt without slip.
