Usage

Usage

Backstop (One-Way Clutch) — a sprag or roller-ramp clutch on the drive or pulley shaft that lets the conveyor rotate only forward and locks instantly against reverse motion. On inclined conveyors it prevents the loaded belt from running backwards if the drive fails or power is lost, avoiding spillage, damage and injury. Fitted on the low-speed head shaft; not for reversible belts.

Technical overview

Drive components deliver power from the motor to the pulley. HBXM supplies gearmotors, fluid and grid couplings, and brake units selected to match belt tension, torque and starting load for reliable starts under full burden.

How do I match a drive to my conveyor?

Size by required belt pull and speed: calculate motor power from tonnage, lift and friction, then select gear ratio and coupling to handle start-up torque.

Why use a fluid coupling?

It soft-starts the motor under heavy load, limits inrush current and protects the gearbox from shock during acceleration.

When is a holding brake required?

On inclined conveyors a brake holds the loaded belt stationary when stopped, preventing rollback and protecting the coupling and structure.

Can HBXM supply a complete drive package?

Yes. We bundle motor, gearbox, coupling and brake with the drive pulley so the power train is matched and tested as one set.

What is a torque limiter on a conveyor?

A torque limiter sits between the gearbox and the drive pulley and slips or disengages when torque spikes, protecting the gearbox, shaft and belt from jams and overload.

How do I choose a conveyor belt motor?

Size the conveyor belt motor from belt speed, capacity, lift, friction and starting load, then add margin for cold starts and heavy bulk. We match motor and gearbox to your duty cycle.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When does a conveyor need a backstop?

Whenever the belt's lifting component can drive the system backwards — in practice any incline above a few degrees with a loaded belt. Without one, a power trip can run the belt back and bury the tail.

How is it sized?

From the back-driving torque of the loaded belt, with a safety factor. Sizing on motor power, which is a common shortcut, undersizes it.

Where is it mounted?

On the drive shaft, the gearbox output or an intermediate shaft, depending on the torque and the space available. We supply the mounting arrangement with the unit.
