How to Select Conveyor Idlers: A Buyer's Guide
Conveyor idlers (the rotating rollers that support the belt) are the single largest population of wear parts on a belt conveyor — and the most common cause of unplanned downtime. Choosing the right conveyor idlers up front pays back for years. Here is the field checklist we use when specifying idlers for mining, port and cement plants.
1. Pick the right idler type for the duty
- Carrying (troughing) idlers shape the belt into a trough to carry bulk material. Standard 3-roll 35° sets suit most applications.
- Return idlers support the empty belt on its way back. Use flat or V-return rolls to keep the belt centered.
- Impact idlers / buffer zones sit under loading points to absorb the shock of falling material and protect the belt.
2. Match diameter and tube wall to belt speed
Higher belt speeds and heavier loads call for larger idler diameters (e.g. 89 mm, 108 mm, 133 mm and up) and thicker tube walls. A larger diameter lowers rotational speed, reduces bearing wear and extends grease life. As a rule of thumb, idler diameter should scale with both belt width and speed.
3. Set spacing by load, not by habit
Carrying idler spacing is typically 1.0–1.5 m; closer spacing (around 0.5 m) is used at the loading zone. Return idlers are usually spaced 2.5–3.0 m. Tighter spacing reduces belt sag and spillage but raises cost — optimize rather than default.
4. Sealing and bearings decide lifespan in harsh sites
In dusty, wet or high-load environments (think coal, cement, ore), the seal matters more than the paint. Look for multi-labyrinth, non-contact seals with greased-for-life bearings. Our sealed bearing housings are built for exactly these conditions.
5. Materials and corrosion protection
Standard carbon steel suits dry indoor lines; galvanized or painted tubes and rubber-disc rolls extend life in corrosive or sticky material. For food or special chemical duty, discuss stainless or HDPE options with your supplier.
6. OEM / ODM: match your existing drawings
