Preventive maintenance

Predictive maintenance
Maintenance triggered by condition-monitoring data.
Condition monitoring
Continuous or periodic measurement of vibration, temperature and current.
Thermography
Infrared survey to find hot bearings, idlers and couplings.
Vibration analysis
Diagnosis of bearing and alignment faults from vibration spectra.
Oil analysis
Laboratory test of gearbox oil for wear metals and contamination.
Inspection checklist
Standard list of points to check on each inspection round.
Belt inspection
Regular check of covers, edges and splices for damage.
Belt thickness gauge
Instrument that measures cover thickness to track wear.
Idler rotation check
Hand or thermal check that every idler turns freely.
Alignment check
Measurement of pulley, gearbox and frame alignment.
Laser alignment
Precise shaft alignment using a laser tool.
Belt training adjustment
Field adjustment of idlers and pulleys to correct belt drift.
Torque check
Re-torquing of critical bolted joints after a run-in period.

MTBF
Mean time between failures.
MTTR
Mean time to repair a failure.
Run-in period
Initial running time during which checks are more frequent.
Belt change-out
Planned replacement of the belt, usually by pulling the new belt through.
Idler replacement interval
Planned interval at which idlers are replaced as a group.
Cleaner blade adjustment
Setting blade pressure and angle to keep cleaning effective.
Lagging replacement
Re-lagging a drive pulley when friction falls.
Gearbox oil change
Periodic oil change per the gearbox maker's schedule.
Structural inspection
Check for corrosion, cracks and loose bolts on the frame.
Welding repair
Field welding of frames and chutes; needs a qualified procedure.
Downtime
Unplanned or planned time the conveyor is not available.
Commissioning
Testing and adjusting the conveyor before handover.
Operator training
Instruction for operators on safe start, stop and inspection.
Spare belt storage
Cool, dry, shaded storage to slow rubber ageing.
Scheduled shutdown
Agreed maintenance window used for major works.
Root-cause analysis
Investigation of why a fault happened, not just what failed.
Fault log
Record of faults, causes and fixes kept for trends.
Nameplate data
Rated data recorded on machine nameplates for reference.
