Pull-cord emergency stop
Emergency stop operated by pulling a cord along the belt; mandatory on long conveyors.
Emergency stop button
Local stop button sited so any person can reach one quickly.
Emergency stop distance
Belt travel after a stop is called; must be short enough to be safe.
Machine guard
Fixed or interlocked barrier around pulleys, couplings and drive parts.
Nip point
Gap where belt and pulley or idler can trap fingers or clothing.
Interlock
Device that prevents machine start while a guard is open.
Tear (rip) detector
System that detects a longitudinal belt tear and stops the conveyor.
Belt deviation switch
Sensor that trips or alarms when the belt drifts off centre.
Blocked chute detector
Sensor that detects a chute blockage and stops the feed.
Plugged belt detector
Sensor that detects material piling up at the discharge.
Level probe
Sensor measuring material level in a bin or chute.
Proximity sensor
Non-contact sensor used for position and rotation monitoring.
Lockout / tagout (LOTO)
Procedure that isolates energy before maintenance; mandatory before touching moving parts.
Belt safety factor
Ratio of belt breaking strength to working tension; typically 8–12 for fabric belts.
Audible / visual alarm
Warning given before a conveyor starts.
Start warning
Alarm sounded for a set time before a remote start.
Fire detection
Sensors and suppression for coal and biomass conveyors.
Water spray suppression
Automatic water spray that quenches a belt fire.
Dust explosion zone
Area classification that dictates explosion-proof equipment.
ATEX / IECEx
European and international schemes for explosion-protected equipment.
Noise level
Sound pressure at the operator position; limit usually 85 dB(A).
Access platform
Walkable platform with guard rails for safe maintenance access.
Confined space
Enclosed volume (silo, chute) requiring a permit to enter.
Working at height
Any task above a set height requiring fall protection.
Risk assessment
Formal study of hazards and controls required before commissioning.
Emergency pull-wire switch
Switch at the end of a pull cord that trips the conveyor.
Personnel detection
System that stops the conveyor if a person enters a hazardous zone.
Spillage guard
Physical barrier that stops material spilling onto walkways.
Chute access door
Interlocked door giving safe access to the chute interior.
Safety signage
Warning labels and signs required around the conveyor.
Belt sway sensor
Roller lever that trips when the belt edge wanders, shutting the drive down before the belt is damaged.
Belt speed sensor
Encoder or proximity pick-up on a return idler or pulley that reports true belt speed for interlocks and throughput control.
Belt rip detector
Trip wire or loop embedded under the belt top cover that breaks on a longitudinal tear and stops the drive immediately.
Chute blockage sensor
Level probe or tilt switch inside a transfer chute; blocks feed as soon as the chute fills with material.
Tilt switch
Simple mercury-free tilt element used for chute blockage, stockpile level and belt misalignment indication.
Pull-cord switch
Emergency stop operated by pulling a cord that runs the full length of the conveyor — required on both sides in many regions.
Bearing temperature sensor
RTD or thermocouple on the drive pulley bearings; rising temperature is the earliest warning of lubrication or alignment failure.
